Where are you going – next?

I believe travel is what adds spice to life and helps me further appreciate “there’s no place like home”. But whether you’re an inexperienced traveller or well-seasoned, the first thing to ask yourself is “where do I feel like going next?” Do you need relaxation, excitement, physical challenges, enjoying different cultures or being entertained? I like a variety of experiences so I tend to mix it up between trips and on them as well. Too many museums in a row becomes monotonous!

The internet is a huge resource that opens up possibilities of different destinations . It’s the first place to look if you aren’t sure where to go and maybe one of the places you find will plant a seed that will eventually come to fruition and bloom into a fully-formed travel plan. There are tons of lists out there about the most popular travel locations and there’s a reason why people love to travel to these places so much. Here’s a sample of the top 10 places to go according to US News and World Report:

  1. Paris
  2. South Island, New Zealand
  3. Rome
  4. Tahiti
  5. London
  6. Maui
  7. Bora Bora
  8. Phuket
  9. Grand Canyon
  10. Yosemite

Of this list, Paris was on my list of most want to visit places and I’ve been there now three times! London is a perfect place for visiting if you want to go to Europe but are worried about a language barrier (but you shouldn’t be worried because English is used all over the world). It is clean and thoroughly European. Maui is dramatic and tropical. Right now, I am drawn to Europe as it has so much history and charm, as well as being welcoming to Americans.

After I get a list of places I may be interested in going, I first check on available flights, whether using frequent flyer miles or finding a good value for the flight. I’ll talk about that more in later posts as its a deserves its own post. I also usually look up what each place has to offer. Specifically, I use Rick Steves to see what he recommends doing in each of these places. He’s a little quirky but he has well-researched ideas on what’s worthwhile to visit. Using his website, I discovered one of our favorite places in the world, the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. We even met several people from Colorado vacationing there because the Lauterbrunnen valley is twice as deep as Yosemite, so the change in elevation is magnificent. Little Swiss villages and chalets up on the cliff trails offer hot chocolate with schnapps as a break from hiking. Along with the quaint ringing of cowbells, the villages of Murren and Wengen are as idyllic and breathtaking as it comes.

I am always thinking ahead to where I’m going to go next. Life can be shorter than we wish and I don’t want to regret not experiencing it. I want to keep on exploring with my husband and making more memories to share!

(I want to give a shout out to Sandy and Gretchen for their inspiration).
